Dr Jeff Evenson

Dr Jeff Evenson

Senior Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer (New York)

Corning (USA)

Jeff Evenson joined Corning in 2011 and was named chief strategy officer in 2015. In this role, he oversees corporate strategy, corporate communications, and advanced analytics.

Glass is one of the most transformative materials of all time.  From spectacles to telescopes to fiber optics, glass has been responsible for numerous technological and cultural revolutions.

Yet despite glass’s history, Corning believes some of the greatest glass innovations are still ahead.  The ubiquity of glass in our day-to-day lives, the accelerating pace of glass innovation, and the increasingly vital role that glass plays in a broad range of industries have led Corning to declare that we are living in The Glass Age.

Jeff will discuss the aesthetic and technical properties that make glass such a remarkable material and explain how today’s deep understanding of glass physics and chemistry is unleashing new capabilities faster than ever.  He will describe how highly engineered glass compositions and optical technologies are enabling seamless delivery of real-time information and interactive displays with life-like images, intuitive interfaces, and exciting new form factors. Jeff will share his thoughts on the implications of glass innovations for advertising in diverse environments from retail windows to digital fitting rooms to head-up displays in next-generation cars. And he will invite the audience to consider how glass can address their challenges and enhance their lives – because the Glass Age isn’t just a technological movement, it’s a human one.

Prior to his current position, Jeff served as senior vice president and operations chief of staff, and was responsible for leading the process to create Corning's annual operating priorities and overseeing a variety of strategic programs and growth initiatives across the company's diverse businesses. Previously, he spent seven years at Sanford C. Bernstein as a senior vice president and senior analyst focused on data networking companies. Earlier in his career, Evenson was a partner at McKinsey & Company, where he led technology and market assessments for early-stage technologies.

Jeff has a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University, where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow, and a bachelor's degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr Pauline Tay

Dr Pauline Tay

Deputy Director

National Research Foundation

Dr Pauline manages the Innovation and Enterprise (I&E) division at NRF (based in the Singapore Prime Minsters office), designing policies and schemes to catalyse innovation and facilitate the translation of research into impactful outcomes – to improve the world around us. Initiatives range from support of early innovation coming out of universities, formation and growth of hi-tech startups and the facilitation of research collaboration and technology development by industry.

Responsible for creating and implementing the Singapore Week of Innovation and TeCHnology (SWITCH). She was tasked to energise the innovation and tech event space in Singapore and NRF gave the opportunity to transform how things were done in the past – singular events ran by different organisations throughout the year that were often duplicative. Tech conferences in Singapore were predictable, dull and hardly integrated with lifestyle.

As a regional innovation leader, Dr Pauline was determined to change that image and created a completely new concept for the tech scene in Singapore.

SWITCH is a concept where multiple complementary tech events come together to plug and play in an open platform integrated with lifestyle elements, reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of the Singapore ecosystem.  It is driven by a community of people, not just individual organisations, many of whom are volunteers in the innovation and entrepreneurial space, coming together to make it all work for the ecosystem they believe in.

Find out all about SWITCH 2018 HERE

Robert Scoble

Robert Scoble

World Leading Tech Author & Entrepreneur

(Silicon Valley)

As entrepreneur in residence at Upload VR Robert travels the world looking for what’s happening on the bleeding edge of emerging technology.

Robert is the co-author of "The Fourth Transformation: Augmented Reality & Artificial Intelligence" (coauthored with Shel Israel).

In the beginning, there were mainframe computers and punch cards. Since then, we've seen three transformations. The latest, augmented reality plus artificial intelligence, will change more than the previous three combined.

Each transformation opened up new opportunities, new capabilities, and created new companies and sources of wealth. Each transformation also killed technologies, deprecated old ways of doing things, and destroyed companies.

The next transformation will do exactly the same thing, the fourth transformation, Scoble and Israel say, will "will move technology from what we carry to what we wear." The user interface will change from a "screen you tap to computer-generated images that you actually touch and feel."

"Mixed-reality glasses will control self-driving cars, drones, robots, and the Internet of things (IoT), but they will do a lot more than just that: they will blur the lines between that which is real and that which is a computer-generated illusion," say Scoble and Israel. "Now, instead of sitting and passively watching stuff on screens, we will become immersed and surrounded, wandering freely in and around it."

Shopping will change, Scoble and Israel say. We'll see metadata about products, selfie avatars showing us in that new shirt or shoes, instant mixed-reality constructions teasing us with a view of that new sofa in our living room.

"AI allows hardware and software platforms to perform tasks as if they were human," Scoble and Israel say. "These include visual-perception-enabled photo recognition of your favorite pet, natural language recognition such as we use when talking with Siri, and autonomous decision-making such as could be used in killer drones."

Ultimately, as well, AI will increase the pace of change.

And that too will require adaptation from people and from business:

"...a vital addition to the library of any computer vision practitioner."

--Trevor Darrell, Professor, EECS, UC Berkeley

"The book provides a clearly written introduction and tutorial that makes computer vision applications accessible to a range of new audiences."

--Ken Goldberg, Professor of Engineering, UC Berkeley and Vice-President of Technical Activities, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society

"This book's main job is to provide an introduction to OpenCV. It does that very well. It does something more: it reviews clearly and concisely many of the main concepts in machine vision. The book may be used to support an introductory machine vision course, picking up where the lectures left off and holding the students' hand in bringing what they learned in class to life."

--Professor Pietro Perona, Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computation & Neural Systems, Director of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center in Neuromorphic Systems Engineering

"Learning OpenCV provides a conceptual framework for this well-maintained and optimized collection of software, and makes its components accessible through clear background explanations, a thorough yet simple description of the function interfaces, and well chosen, attractive examples. Much more than a user manual, this book would form an excellent basis for a hands-on, introductory course in computer vision."

--Carlo Tomasi, CS Prof. at Duke University

"This highly accessible book should be of great value to anyone interested in building and understanding computer vision applications. It fills an important gap between many more theoretically-oriented textbooks in the field of computer vision, by providing a highly accessible hands-on guide on how to build actual computer vision software. If you are like me, you will find it a pleasure to read, and full of insights. This is a highly practical book."

--Sebastian Thrun, Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University

"Gary Bradski, the primary developer of OpenCV, and co-author Adrian Kaehler, have done an excellent job in writing this book. The chapters are written in a highly user-friendly fashion, with clear explanations and hands-on examples. The book can be used as both a reference book to the OpenCV library as well as a tutorial or text for many fundamental concepts in computer vision. This is a must-have book on any computer vision bookshelf."

--L. Fei - Fei, Computer Science Dept., Princeton University

"Learning OpenCV will likely occupy a prominent spot on the bookshelf of almost anyone working in computer vision...As readers, we are fortunate to have this chance to learn about OpenCV directly from Gary Bradski, who was the driving force and prime developer behind OpenCV. With his coauthor, Adrian Kaehler, they provide a clear and well-thought-out overview of the entire OpenCV code base, with many simple introductory examples that make it easy to slowly gain expertise with this large library of software."

--David Lowe, Professor, Computer Science, University of British Columbia

"The author has done the computer vision community a great service by organizing and championing the OpenCV library. This library is useful for practicioners, and is an excellent tool for those entering the field: it is a set of computer vision algorithms that work as advertised."

--Bill Freeman, Professor, EECS, MIT

Dr Adrian Kaehler will deliver a keynote at Convergence 005 | SWITCH, at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore on 18 September.

A designer by training, Olof has worked in digital for more than 20 years. To this day, he holds the same beliefs that drove him to found Fjord in 2001: digital will continue to change the world, and design will re-imagine experiences and services that are central in people’s lives.

Fjord Trends 2017

  • EPHEMERAL STORIES: Where next, now that everyone's a storyteller? It is time for brands to give their audience the space to shape their own story.

  • SHINY API PEOPLE: Rewiring for innovation. Breaking down silos to create fertile ground for organization-wide innovation.

  • BLURRED REALITY: As Mixed Reality moves towards the mainstream, let's turn away from single reality experiences to focus on harnessing and combining all types of reality.

  • WORLD ON WHEELS: The focus is now on the car as a connected mobile environment in which things happen via multiple devices.

  • HOMES WITHOUT BOUNDARIES: From the smart home to the helpful home, with services built around and for humans rather than technology and objects.

  • HOURGLASS BRANDS: Don't get stuck in the middle! With a polarized brand landscape, brands sitting in the squeezed middle will need to optimize their strategies in order to survive.

  • ME, MYSELF AND A.I.: Humanizing chatbots, emotional intelligence (EQ) becomes a critical A.I. differentiator.

  • UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES: Organizations should start to think about social experiences to guard against unintended consequences of their activities.

By now, both Olof’s accent and identity are confused. As a rare Swedish-speaking Finn that has spent most of his adult life living in London and New York, he has also spent significant time working with clients across five continents and in numerous languages. Currently, he calls New York home.

Lawrence Crumpton

Lawrence Crumpton

HoloLens & Mixed Reality, Asia

Microsoft (USA / Australia)

Mixed Reality is predicted to be most important new tech of 2017.

A hybrid of both AR and VR, Mixed Reality (MR) is far more advanced than VR because it combines the use of several types of technologies including sensors, advanced optics and next gen computing power. All of this technology bundled into a single device provides the user with the capability to overlay augmented holographic digital content into your real-time space, creating scenarios that are unbelievably realistic.

How does it work? MR works by scanning your physical environment and creating a 3D map of your surroundings so the device will know exactly where and how to place digital content into that space – realistically – while allowing you to interact with it using gestures. Much different than VR where the user is immersed in a totally different world, MR experiences invite digital content into your real-time surroundings, allowing you to interact with them.

Microsoft's regional Hololens and MR solution specialist, Lawrence Crumpton, says this technology is promising a powerful hybrid between virtual reality (VR) - a full 360-degree simulation of reality - and augmented reality (AR), which superimposes content on to the existing physical world.

"Mixed reality is emerging as the next giant leap in the [VR/AR] industry" he said.

With great new designs in Windows Mixed Reality Headsets from partners like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. These headsets use Microsoft’s platform to enable a single and consistent user interface, standardized inputs, and a universal app platform for developers.

Previously Lawrence led an Australian team of students to a World Wide victory in the 2014 Imagine Cup – a competition where each year over 100,000 students from 121 countries compete to address some of the world’s most difficult challenges using technology.  As a result, team “Eyenaemia” took home a $50,000 cash prize and a meeting with Bill Gates and are continuing to bring their non-invasive, machine learning based anemia diagnostic solution “Eyenaemia” to market. Born in the American Deep South, today Lawrence is proud to be an Australian citizen.

We are very excited to host Lawrence at Convergence 005 | SWITCH on 18 September at Marina Bay Sands.

Ben Moir

Ben Moir

Director, Snepo FabLab & WearableX

Sydney & New York

Wearable Experiments, which is based in New York, also teamed up with CHE Proximity to create Foxtel's alert shirt which lets Fox Football AFL viewers feel what the players are feeling in real-time.

"You can tap into the emotions of the players and the shirt lets you know their heartbeat, if they were exhausted or if they're frustrated. You get a heightened sense of what's happening," Mr Moir said.

The shirt converts data on the player's physical condition into sensations.

"We've also created the navigate jacket which lets you punch directions into your phone and then the jacket tells you where to head," Mr Moir said.

"The jacket is more of a concept, we didn't launch it in stores, but it's something to educate people about how wearables need to be fashionable. People don't want to look like a computer."

The business, which is self-funded, is also expanding into fitness, creating yoga wearables.

A global opportunity is opening for wearable technology in every sector. Although figures vary between analysts, for instance, IDTechEx estimates $US50 billion ($53 billion) has been recently invested or will soon be invested in wearable technologies. And it says that five of the top technology companies – Google, Microsoft, Cisco, Apple and Oracle – have a combined war chest of $US245 billion that could be spent on wearables. On some estimates, 50 million wearable devices will be sold this year, quadrupling in annual shipments within three years. Last October, analyst Juniper estimated the sector would be worth $US19 billion on 130 million shipments by 2018 from $US1.4 billion last year.

Ben Moir is the founding member of Snepo Research where for the last 10 years he has used his diverse knowledge to design systems incorporating new hardware technology and software. In 2013 Ben setup Wearable Experiments (We:eX) and heads up the technical development and integration of electronics into garments and accessories.

Formally trained as an Electrical Engineer, he brings to Snepo a commercial grounding but also likes to roll up his sleeves, taking a hands on approach to design and product development. He leads a team of developers, guiding the architecture and philosophy of the bespoke solutions developed at Snepo. One of Snepo’s key points of difference which Ben Moir built into the DNA of the company is its commitment to research. All Snepo staff members are entitled to spend time researching new projects and technology and approaches.

Through this practice Snepo stays at the forefront of emerging technology and user behaviour. This research also results in a suite of knowledge and tools which Snepo makes available to its clients and which can be leveraged for future projects.

Ben has become internationally recognised for his work on Fundawear, with the campaign receiving a Silver Lion at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Ben's latest product the 'Alert Shirt' is a fan jersey that uses wearable technology to enable fans to feel what the players feel live as it happens during the game. Not content working on just one product release for Q1 2014, the NAVIGATE jacket is the first incarnation of a product that gives consumers their eyes back and removes the screen from their hands.

Ben has recently been presenting at conferences globally including SXSW, mLab, Apps World UK, and Wearable Tech San Francisco. Wearable Experiments has recently been nominated for best startup at Fashion 2.0 NYC.

Ben Moir will deliver a keynote at Convergence 005 | SWITCH, at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore on 18 September.

Mandy Nichols

Film Costume & Fashion, 3D Printing

Sydney & Melbourne

Mandy is a top fashion, film, TV, theatre & advertising designer, costume maker and stylist.

Graduating from NIDA with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (costume) Mandy has worked as a key costume cutter and maker with film credits including  Director Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Australia’ & Academy award & Bafta award winning ‘The Great Gatsby’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawntreader’, 'Xmen Origins: Wolverine' and 'The Wolverine'.

Recent credits include 'Promethesus', 'Alien: Covenant', 'Mad Max' and period television series 'A Place to Call Home' and Costume buyer for 'Truth' featuring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford.

Mandy has worked extensively in theatre as a costume Supervisor and cutter/maker for Australian theatre companies including Belvoir theatre company, The Bell Shakespeare company and Opera Australia.

In 2015 Mandy received the highly acclaimed Churchill Fellowship & Gilbert Spottiswood Fellowship to develop expertise in the traditional and current practices of corsetry and couture womenswear, examining practices across Europe, India and Japan, which has lead her on a diverse and creative journey including many weeks examining garments in the archives of the V&A museum in London and the Balenciaga museum in Getaria, Spain. The fellowship also led to the opportunity to study privately with a third generation corsetiere in Paris and work within the couture ateliers of Schiaparelli and Givenchy.

Mandy’s interest is the influence of technology on both Haute Couture and machine-made fashion alongside the intersection of fashion, retail and tech. Haute couture has always been handmade, however, with recent developments in technology and how clothes are made there are a small group of designers who are shifting the idea of this tradition. Mandy is also following the development of smart fitting rooms, advances in 3D printing and more userfriendly shopping technologies.

"Like with any piece of innovation, designers have to start somewhere, and you better believe that the race is already being run by major shoe companies like Nike, adidas, New Balance and Under Armour who all want to stake their claim as the king of 3D printing.

The practice is viewed as a mutually beneficial endeavor for both brand and consumer. For the former, it has the ability to dramatically cut down on waste and can also dramatically expedite the design process. For the latter, specificity to one’s needs – in terms of size, fit and athletic discipline – can be much more tailor-made."

Highsnobiety

3D printing has significant implications for luxury garments, shoes and bags, as well as jewellery, eyewear and watchmaking. It has become very apparent that technology is invading every aspect of the fashion industry from the way clothes are made to the methods in which they are consumed.

Working on costume for the movie 'Gods of Egypt' Mandy used a mixture of traditional costume and 3D printing, we are excited to hear all about her epxerience.

Mandy Nichols will deliver a keynote at Convergence 005 | SWITCH, at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore on 18 September.

Jared Simcox

Jared Simcox

General Manager, Australia

Scoot Airlines

Jared’s roots have been firmly planted in all aspects of aviation. Migrating to Australia in 2012, a stint at Curry Aviation followed, but Jared’s last role, Wholesale Travel Manager at Groupon ANZ, gave him vital experience in distribution channels, and business during the digital revolution. He considers turning on-line business into offline revenue critical, in today’s aviation industry. That knowledge will be invaluable, further establishing Scoot in Australia with its planned long haul European expansion in June 2017.

“What really excited me about this role at Scoot, is that this company is out to challenge the status quo. Since Scoot’s launch in 2012, the highly visible, yellow liveried and quirky airline, has quickly risen to become a benchmark and trendsetter in the low-cost market segment,” said Jared.

Scoot is an airline for the young, the young-at-heart and the value-seeking. People who remember that travel is all about spontaneous discovery, connections and fresh experiences. Simply put, people with Scootitude. Operating a fleet of 14 brand new Boeing 787s, Scoot picked up Best Asia-Pacific Low Cost Carrier three years running. Scoot connects people across 59 cities in Asia, Europe, Australia and India with our fleet on Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and Airbus A320 and A319s. Operating from Sydney, Melbourne, The Gold Coast and Perth.

Artificial intelligence sprawls over an ever increasing terrain: from digital home assistants to self-driving cars, battlefield tactics to investment guidance. And now, AI looks to powering the skies. Algorithms are learning to predict delays, giving airports and airlines a better shot at avoiding them. Airlines like Scoot are using the tech to remake the ticketing process painless and turn the in-flight experience into a personalized joy. But the true promise sits in the cockpit, where AI autopilots could help manage the complex airline operations and even respond to the millisecond-urgency of unfolding cockpit crises.

Research here is young but developing quickly. In 2015, Boeing and Carnegie Mellon University launched the Aerospace Data Analytics Lab, a bid to use machine learning to spin massive piles of information into action item gold.

We are very excited to be hosting Jared Simcox and hearing his take on consumer driven emerging technology at Convergence 005 | SWITCH, on 18 September at Marina Bay Sands.

Dato' Teng Chang Khim

Dato' Teng Chang Khim

Guest of Honour, Convergence | SWITCH (VIP Guest)

Senior Exec. Councillor (EXCO), Chairman of Standing Committees Investment, Selangor, Malaysia

Hon. Dato' Teng Chang Khim obtained his bachelor’s degree in law from the University of London, and started his career as an advocate and solicitor at the High Court of Malaya, which he did from 1995 until 2008. He became politically active at the same time, first as State Assemblyman for Selangor. In the executive branch, he was in charge of local governments, R&D, and is currently the Chairman for the Standing Committees for Investment, Industry & Commerce, SMEs, and Transportation.

Excepts from The Business Year article, read full article HERE

Selangor represents approximately a quarter of Malaysia's total GDP. What do you think are the key strengths of the state?

We have been an economic powerhouse not just over the past five years, but also since the country's independence 50 years ago. We have extensive experience in dealing with foreign investors and supporting a broad range of industry players... Selangor is the gateway to the larger region of Asia. Culturally as well, the people in Malaysia speak Chinese, Tamil, Bahasa, and English. You can find partners here to give you access to the markets of China, India, and Indonesia.

Selangor has a strong manufacturing industry for electronics, chemicals, and automobiles. What are your focuses to attract investment?

We focus on the five clusters of: transport equipment, machinery, licenses, food and beverages, and electronics. Within the five, we place special focus on biotechnology and life sciences, including the medical equipment industry. Malaysia has seen rapid growth in the medical sector in terms of medical tourism and is shifting our manufacturing industry toward this purpose. In transport equipment, there is special attention placed on aerospace, again divided into five clusters: MRO, OEMs, engineering services, training, and aero parks. In the service industry, our vision is for Selangor to become a global trading hub and a financial and logistics center. We do not just have a vision but a specific strategy and plan in place to realize this potential.

How are you preparing for the development of Selangor being the site of the new Asia Aerospace City (AAC) in Subang?

We have world-class infrastructure, including the KL International Airport and the largest low-cost airport just next to it. This definitely helps us to grow the industry. Over 62% of the aerospace activities in Malaysia are located in Selangor, which is the reason why we recently set up the Selangor Aerospace Council, in addition to the efforts of the federal government. The AAC is an exciting initiative that brings together all aspects of the aerospace industry such as manufacturing, engineering, and R&D. We work in close cooperation with the federal government to do our share. On our part, we look to offer our own vocational training program in the aerospace industry.

Hon. Dato' Teng Chang Khim, is Selangor State Senior Executive Councillor (EXCO), Chairman of Standing Committees for Investment, Industry & Commerce, Small & Medium Enterprises (SME) and Transportation, Selangor State, Malaysia.

We are very excited to host Hon. Dato' Teng Chang Khim as one of our VIP Guests at Convergence 005 | SWITCH.
