Facebook Spaces VR

When Facebook bought Oculus in 2014, the obvious question was what Facebook was planning to do with a virtual reality company? CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the time that VR would be “the most social platform ever”. Facebook Spaces for the Oculus Rift was first shown off at the Oculus Connect conference, when Mark Zuckerberg donned a Rift onstage. It was built off similar experiences, like the existing Oculus Rooms feature for Gear VR and Oculus’ Toybox demo from two years ago.

Facebook AR Camera Effects

Camera Effects platform will be available inside Facebook’s Camera feature on smartphones, but the Camera Effects platform is designed to eventually be compatible with future augmented reality (AR) hardware, such as eyeglasses. Mark Zuckerberg tells TechCrunch “the first augmented reality platform that becomes mainstream isn’t going to be glasses, it’s going to be cameras.” He says other apps (like Snapchat) have been keeping their augmented reality experience creation tools to themselves, but “building an open platform I think is going to be one of the big advances that pushes this forward . . . all developers can work on [the open platform] so that way you don’t just have 10 or 20 effects but you have thousands.” Facebook is now allowing developers to apply for access to the closed beta of the platform’s AR Studio tool.

Facebook Deep Learning

AI is going to bring major shifts in society through developments in self-driving cars, medical image analysis, better medical diagnosis, and personalised medicine. And it will also be the backbone of many of the most innovative apps and services. Facebook Artificial Intelligence Researchers (FAIR) seek to understand and develop systems with human level intelligence by advancing the longer-term academic problems surrounding AI. With 1.2 billion people uploading 136,000 photos and updating their status 293,000 times per minute, until recently Facebook could only hope to draw value from a tiny fraction of its unstructured data – information which isn’t easily quantified and put into rows and tables for computer analysis. Deep Learning is helping to play a part in changing that.  Deep Learning techniques enables machines to learn to classify data by themselves.

Claire has a wealth of production experience and a love for emerging technology. Having a career which has spanned ad agencies, production companies, art galleries, start-ups and industry press, she has established herself as a leading figure across Australia and Asia's advertising and media industry.
We are excited to host Claire and hear about Facebook's exciting work with VR, AR and other emerging technologies.
