Film Costume & Fashion, 3D Printing

Sydney & Melbourne

Mandy is a top fashion, film, TV, theatre & advertising designer, costume maker and stylist.

Graduating from NIDA with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (costume) Mandy has worked as a key costume cutter and maker with film credits including  Director Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Australia’ & Academy award & Bafta award winning ‘The Great Gatsby’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawntreader’, 'Xmen Origins: Wolverine' and 'The Wolverine'.

Recent credits include 'Promethesus', 'Alien: Covenant', 'Mad Max' and period television series 'A Place to Call Home' and Costume buyer for 'Truth' featuring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford.

Mandy has worked extensively in theatre as a costume Supervisor and cutter/maker for Australian theatre companies including Belvoir theatre company, The Bell Shakespeare company and Opera Australia.

In 2015 Mandy received the highly acclaimed Churchill Fellowship & Gilbert Spottiswood Fellowship to develop expertise in the traditional and current practices of corsetry and couture womenswear, examining practices across Europe, India and Japan, which has lead her on a diverse and creative journey including many weeks examining garments in the archives of the V&A museum in London and the Balenciaga museum in Getaria, Spain. The fellowship also led to the opportunity to study privately with a third generation corsetiere in Paris and work within the couture ateliers of Schiaparelli and Givenchy.

Mandy’s interest is the influence of technology on both Haute Couture and machine-made fashion alongside the intersection of fashion, retail and tech. Haute couture has always been handmade, however, with recent developments in technology and how clothes are made there are a small group of designers who are shifting the idea of this tradition. Mandy is also following the development of smart fitting rooms, advances in 3D printing and more userfriendly shopping technologies.

"Like with any piece of innovation, designers have to start somewhere, and you better believe that the race is already being run by major shoe companies like Nike, adidas, New Balance and Under Armour who all want to stake their claim as the king of 3D printing.

The practice is viewed as a mutually beneficial endeavor for both brand and consumer. For the former, it has the ability to dramatically cut down on waste and can also dramatically expedite the design process. For the latter, specificity to one’s needs – in terms of size, fit and athletic discipline – can be much more tailor-made."

Highsnobiety

3D printing has significant implications for luxury garments, shoes and bags, as well as jewellery, eyewear and watchmaking. It has become very apparent that technology is invading every aspect of the fashion industry from the way clothes are made to the methods in which they are consumed.

Working on costume for the movie 'Gods of Egypt' Mandy used a mixture of traditional costume and 3D printing, we are excited to hear all about her epxerience.

Mandy Nichols will deliver a keynote at Convergence 005 | SWITCH, at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore on 18 September.
